Going to the doctor or dentist can be an unsettling experience for children as well as many adults. Varying degrees of "white coat syndrome" affect people who experience an irrational fear of physicians or anything related to a doctor's office--stethoscopes, needles and that dreaded "white coat." This usually unfounded apprehension often causes a patient's heart rate and blood pressure to increase as soon as they enter the examination room, resulting in inaccurate vitals. Fortunately, healthcare providers have ways that can personalize the health care encounter and provide patients with a more comfortable experience that may reduce the anxiety and panic associated with white coat syndrome.
